That free check engine light scan can tell you a lot about what your car’s computer has detected, but it doesn’t necessarily tell you which part needs replacing.
When a warning light appears on the dashboard, plenty of drivers head straight to an auto parts store for a free scan. But what actually happens when an employee plugs a scanner into your car, and how much can you really learn from the results?
Your Car’s Computer Stores Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Modern vehicles are packed with computers and sensors constantly monitoring everything from engine performance and emissions to transmission operation. When the vehicle detects a problem outside its expected parameters, it can store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in its onboard diagnostic system. On U.S.-market passenger vehicles, OBD-II became standardized beginning with 1996 models.
The check-engine light is essentially your car’s way of saying that the computer has detected something worth investigating. The important part is that the light itself doesn’t tell you exactly what’s broken. A scan retrieves the stored code, giving you a starting point for figuring out what happened.
That’s why an auto parts store scan can be useful. It turns a mysterious dashboard warning into something more specific, such as a code related to an oxygen sensor, ignition system, EVAP system, catalytic-converter efficiency, or another monitored component.
An Employee Plugs A Scanner Into Your OBD-II Port
The actual scan is usually surprisingly simple. On most modern cars, the OBD-II connector is located underneath or near the dashboard on the driver’s side. A parts-store employee connects a diagnostic reader to the port, communicates with the vehicle’s computer and retrieves its stored information.
For example, AutoZone’s Fix Finder service can read Check Engine, ABS and maintenance-related information and provide a report. AutoZone says its free scan generally takes less than a minute once the reader is connected.
Advance Auto Parts similarly uses its ReliaScan system at most locations. The company says the scan itself takes about two minutes and retrieves the stored trouble codes, after which an employee can explain the results and discuss potential next steps.
O’Reilly Auto Parts uses VeriScan, which can retrieve diagnostic trouble codes and generate a report containing possible causes, repair options and suggested parts. O’Reilly says the service is available for most 1996-and-newer OBD-II vehicles.
What The Scan Can Tell You
This is where things get interesting. A scan can give you valuable information, but it’s not necessarily a definitive diagnosis. Depending on the vehicle and scanner, the results can reveal things such as:
The diagnostic trouble code: This identifies the system or condition that triggered the code.
Which system is involved: It could point toward emissions, ignition, fuel delivery, airflow or another monitored system.
Pending codes: Some scanners can identify problems the computer has detected but hasn’t yet confirmed enough times to illuminate the warning light.
Readiness information: The scan can show whether certain emissions monitors have completed their self-tests.
Additional vehicle information: Some advanced systems can retrieve information from other modules, although capabilities vary by vehicle and scanner.
AutoZone’s current Fix Finder service can provide information beyond basic Check Engine codes on supported vehicles, including items such as battery voltage, tire-pressure information, oil-life status and maintenance information.
But there’s a crucial distinction: a trouble code doesn’t necessarily mean the named component is defective. If you get an oxygen-sensor-related code, for example, that doesn’t automatically mean you need an oxygen sensor. The underlying problem could involve wiring, an exhaust leak, an air-fuel issue or another condition causing the sensor to report something abnormal.
A Free Scan Is Not The Same As A Full Diagnosis
This is probably the most important thing to understand before driving away with your scan results.
A parts-store scan is a starting point, not a complete mechanical inspection. Advance Auto Parts explicitly describes its free scan as something that identifies which system reported a fault, while noting that additional testing may be necessary to determine which component actually failed.
O’Reilly makes a similar distinction, noting that its VeriScan report reflects information provided by the vehicle’s computer and does not replace a full mechanical inspection.
That’s why a good mechanic doesn’t simply see a code and immediately replace the corresponding part. The code provides a direction for further diagnosis. The technician may need to inspect wiring, test sensors, check vacuum or exhaust leaks, examine live data or perform other tests before deciding what actually needs repair.
In other words, the scanner tells you where to start looking, not necessarily what to buy.
Drivers Say A Free Scan Is Just The Starting Point
Reddit’s mechanic communities repeatedly make one point: a free scan can tell you what code the car has stored, but that’s not necessarily a diagnosis.
In a recent r/UsedCars discussion, commenters used a P0301 cylinder-misfire code as an example. The code identifies where the problem was detected, but the cause could be anything from ignition to fuel delivery or compression.
The same warning appears in the popular r/AskMechanics thread “A code scan is not a diagnosis”. The mechanic behind the post showed how a scan initially pointed toward a wheel-speed sensor, but further inspection was needed before replacing anything. The takeaway was simple: don’t treat the code as a shopping list for parts.
What Happens After The Scan?
Once the scan is complete, the store can generally give you the code or codes it found and explain what they mean. Depending on the retailer, you may also receive a printed or digital report with potential causes and suggested repairs.
That’s where the business side of the free service comes in. If the problem points toward a replaceable component, the parts-store employee can help you find the appropriate part. AutoZone says its Fix Finder report can recommend parts and, if needed, a local repair shop. O’Reilly similarly says its report can suggest repair options and parts, while Advance says its employees can help customers determine what to do next.
And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. These programs can be genuinely useful for DIYers who want to understand what’s happening before spending money on a repair. A P0301, for example, tells you the computer detected a misfire on a particular cylinder. It doesn’t automatically mean the spark plug is bad. The cause could involve ignition, fuel delivery, compression or several other possibilities.
That’s why the best way to think about a free scan is simple: it’s a clue, not a verdict. If the Check Engine light is flashing, however, that’s a different situation. Both Advance and O’Reilly warn that a flashing light can indicate a serious problem such as an active misfire that could damage the catalytic converter or engine. In that situation, continuing to drive simply because the scan is free is not a good strategy.
