RAC Warranty has announced a surge in EV warranty business this year.
It said year-to-date sales for used electric vehicle (EV) policies at RAC Warranty have already exceeded the whole of 2025.
More than 15,000 EV policies were sold in the first six months of the year, compared to nearly 13,000 in 2025 and almost 8,000 in 2024.
Lee Coomber, RAC client director at Assurant, said the figures reflected the growing volume of EVs entering the used market.
“We launched a dedicated EV warranty in 2020, so have extensive experience of creating policies for this kind of vehicle.
“For a long time, this was a specialist area but it does feel as though a corner is being turned and electric cars are becoming a more and more popular choice.
“Already in 2026, they have accounted for a significant proportion of our sales volume and based on current trends, we expect volumes to continue growing strongly in the second half of the year.
“Increasingly, the large numbers of EVs that have been bought by fleets in recent times are entering the remarketing cycle and benefiting from growing consumer interest in lower running-cost vehicles.”
Because this was the first electric car purchase being made by most consumers, credible warranty cover was vital for used sales of EVs, he added.
Policy volumes for hybrids at RAC Warranty are also increasing rapidly with sales close to 25,000 in the first half of this year, almost identical to 2025’s total figure.
Lee said: “Many consumers feel more comfortable with a hybrid as their first venture into electrified vehicle ownership and, as the numbers of these vehicles entering the used market rise, there is again a corresponding increase in policies sold.”
