Kia is wasting little time turning its first ground-up electric van into an entire family of vehicles. The manufacturer has released the first teaser images and a video of the PV7, its second dedicated, all-electric addition to its Platform Beyond Vehicle lineup, ahead of its world premiere at IAA Transportation in Hannover on September 14.
As its name suggests, it is larger than the PV5, and it moves Kia’s PBV range higher into the light commercial vehicle market, offering more room and capability. Like its smaller sibling, it is based on the dedicated E-GMP.S electric architecture and is being developed for both commercial and lifestyle applications.
Kia says it plans to add more PV7 variants in the future, and the setting of its teaser shots suggests what might be in the pipeline. They show parts of a PV7 in what looks like a campsite, strongly hinting that Kia plans a dedicated factory camper version of the larger van.
Kia’s European PBV director previously suggested that the PV7 could eventually spawn “light camper” variants, alongside expected cargo and passenger versions, and the campsite teaser seems to confirm that intention.
Exactly how much larger the production PV7 will be compared to the PV5 remains unconfirmed. However, Kia did release dimensions for the 2024 PV7 concept, which measured 5.27 meters in total length, or 207.5 inches. Depending on the body style, the PV5 measures between 4.695 and 4.890 m, making the concept 38 to 57.5 cm, or about 15 to 23 inches, longer.
Despite that growth spurt, the PV7 is still instantly recognizable as part of the same family. Its upright one-box body features the PV5’s high-mounted lighting, contrasting black hood and pillar trim, and protective cladding. However, it looks more planted with what appear to be wider flared fenders, and its vertical taillights have additional plastic elements at the top and bottom, along with a different lighting signature, giving it a slightly different look from the back.
Alongside the PV5, Kia will also use the IAA venue to demonstrate how extensively the modular platform can be changed. It will display PV5 Cargo L1/H1 and L2/H2 models, a chassis cab, a seven-seat passenger version, a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, and a food truck.
