July new car sales: Winners & Losers

Chinese car brands showed significant increases in sales in July building market share.

Leapmotor saw sales increase by 547% to 1,605 vehicles while Jaecoo saw sales accelerate 187% to 5,502.

Chinese brand delivered a 107% increase in sales to 6,603 units while Omoda was up 82% to 3,403 registrations for the month.

At the other end of the scale Chinese brands Skywell and GWM struggled while Tesla was down 48% to 512 units, Jeep fell 44% to 465 sales, Genesis was down 41% to 64 units, Subaru 37% to 53 sales and Polestar 31% to 568 vehicles.

Seat fell 28% to 1,54 registrations, Hyundai was down 20% to 5,781 units, Peugeot 19% to 4,993 sales and Mazda down 19% to 1,550 sales for the month.

The top selling new car in July was the Ford Puma with 3,531 registrations followed by the Nissan Qashqai (3,224), Kia Sportage (3,205). Two Chinese brands made it into the Top Five listing, the Jaecoo 7 (2,705) and MG HS (2,703).

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “July’s record EV performance is a great achievement, reflecting industry’s huge investment in zero emission mobility.”
