EVs ‘more reliable’ than ICE cars for warranty claims but cost more

ICE cars accounted for all of the top 10 warranty claims by value, according to the latest data from warranty firm AutoProtect.

But, when it comes to average claim values, it reported faults that also appear on EVs, with radar sensors leading the most expensive repairs, while further down the list, EV AC/DC converters also feature.

Mike Edwards, chief revenue officer at AutoProtect Group, said:  “The data clearly suggests EVs are more reliable than ICE models.

“However, this is not the whole picture for drivers. When an EV does have a fault, it can be expensive.”

“Tesla’s average claim value was third on its our list. Most pertinently, the overall EV parc is younger than its ICE equivalent. Nevertheless, with fewer moving parts, the outlook for EV reliability is encouraging.”

All claims relate to sudden, unexpected failures, not hidden faults or undisclosed damage, which recent research suggests is a concern for used-car buyers and affects purchasing confidence.

“Traditional mechanical failures account for the greatest volume of failures, but new technologies feature prominently in the most expensive repairs. Used car buyers clearly want predictability in their budgeting, and with today’s increasingly complex cars, an extended warranty is one way to try to achieve it.”
