Chinese brands may ‘strengthen’ European carmakers

The raft of Chinese brands that have entered the UK market can be viewed as a threat to established European players but may also serve as a catalyst for change.

That’s the view of ICDP chairman Steve Young in a briefing on the new wave of Chinese entrants and their impact on the UK and European market.

“There is a common view that the arrival of the Chinese brands into the European market represents a threat, and this has been reflected in some of the blogs that we have published over the last few years, as well as reaction from most OEM leaders and politicians.

“However, there is an alternative perspective that in applying stress to the established manufacturers and their partners, it could serve as a wake-up call,” said Young.

The Chinese influx could serve as a catalyst for change, changing the way things are done and the pace of change.

“It may actually strengthen the established players if they are forced to address legacy issues that have held them back and are now exposed by new entrants carrying no baggage.  In this briefing, we draw on some of those blog posts to highlight some of the areas where there may be opportunities, rather than threats,” he said.
