The automotive sector has responded to reports over the weekend the government is set to water down ZEV sales targets.
Sue Robinson, chief executive of the NFDA, said: “NFDA has consistently supported the transition to zero-emission vehicles, but it is important that policy reflects market conditions and consumer demand.
“Franchised retailers have invested significantly in preparing for electrification and any review of the ZEV Mandate should help maintain momentum towards net zero while ensuring the transition remains realistic and achievable for consumers, manufacturers and retailers.”
The IMI said: “We welcome the news that the ZEV Mandate is set to be reviewed, but whatever the final figure turns out to be, the direction of travel hasn’t changed – the UK is moving to electric vehicles, and the automotive workforce needs to be ready for that future regardless of where the target line is drawn.
“The government needs to strike a balance right now. Targets have to be realistic and deliverable, for manufacturers, for the supply chain, and for the consumers who’ll ultimately decide how quickly this transition happens.
Tim Tozer said: “Good news indeed, all Starmer needs to do now is put a combination of Tariffs and Quotas on Chinese imports to level the playing field to avoid the wipeout of what is left of UK car manufacturing.”
