Your Car's Camera Is Probably Watching You. But It's Not As Sinister As It Sounds

There’s a good chance your new car has a camera pointed directly at you. Yes, seriously.

It might be tucked away behind the steering wheel, mounted near the instrument cluster, or hidden somewhere around the rearview mirror. And if you’ve noticed it, you may have asked yourself the obvious question: Why is my car watching me?

In most cases, the answer isn’t as sinister as it may seem. The cameras are increasingly part of driver-monitoring systems designed to determine whether you’re paying attention to the road. The car may be steering and controlling speed thanks to advanced driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane centering, but the human behind the wheel is still responsible for driving.

Today’s Level 2 systems still require the driver to remain fully engaged and attentive, according to NHTSA. That’s where the little camera staring back at you comes in.

It’s Watching Your Eyes, Not Just Your Hands

For years, some driver-assistance systems have relied on steering-wheel inputs to determine whether the driver is paying attention. But simply touching the wheel doesn’t necessarily mean you’re looking at the road.

A driver-monitoring camera can go a step further by tracking things such as head position and eye movement. If the system determines that you’re looking away from the road for too long, it can issue an alert and encourage you to pay attention.

NHTSA says camera-based driver-monitoring systems have been used in vehicles since 2018 to monitor driver inattention with SAE Level 2 driving automation systems. The agency is also researching systems that can identify distraction, drowsiness and other changes in a driver’s state.

That’s an important distinction: the camera is not necessarily there to record everything happening inside the cabin. Its primary job can be to determine whether the driver is actually paying attention.

It Becomes More Important With Driver Assistance

The camera makes the most sense when you consider what modern driver-assistance systems can do. Adaptive cruise control can maintain a set speed and following distance. Lane-centering assistance can continuously make steering corrections.

Put those technologies together, and the car can handle a surprising amount of the driving workload. But these are still assistance systems, not fully autonomous driving. NHTSA classifies systems that continuously control both steering and acceleration or braking as Level 2, while emphasizing that the driver remains responsible for operating the vehicle and must stay engaged.

That creates a need for the vehicle to make sure the person in the driver’s seat hasn’t started looking at a phone, turned around to talk to a passenger, or simply fallen asleep. The camera is effectively another layer of supervision.

What The Camera Can Look For

Different systems use different hardware and software, but driver-monitoring cameras can potentially evaluate several aspects of the driver’s behavior.

Eye direction: Is the driver looking toward the road?
Head position: Is the driver’s head facing forward or somewhere else?
Drowsiness: Are there signs that the driver may be falling asleep?
Distraction: Has the driver’s attention remained away from the road for too long?
Driver presence: Is the person supposed to be operating the vehicle actually in position to take control?

Some systems use infrared cameras, which allow them to monitor the driver in changing lighting conditions, including darkness.

Consumer Reports has specifically evaluated driver-monitoring systems and argues that systems should be capable of determining whether the driver’s eyes are actually directed toward the road rather than simply checking whether a hand is touching the steering wheel.

That’s why the camera may appear to be staring directly at your face. It needs a reasonably clear view of your eyes and head to do its job.

But What Happens To The Video Recordings?

This is where things get more complicated. A driver-monitoring camera doesn’t automatically mean your automaker is recording and storing everything it sees. The way these systems handle information varies by manufacturer and vehicle.

BMW, Ford, GM, and Subaru told Consumer Reports that their driver-monitoring systems did not transmit in-cabin video or data outside the vehicle. Tesla’s system was different: Consumer Reports reported that its cabin camera could capture video and, when the driver enabled the relevant data-sharing option, send footage to Tesla.

That distinction matters because a camera collecting information locally is very different from a camera continuously uploading video to a manufacturer’s servers. And privacy is not just a theoretical concern. Consumer Reports has raised broader questions about the amount of driving data modern vehicles collect and how some automakers handle that information.

So if your car has an interior camera, the owner’s manual and privacy settings are worth checking. The hardware alone doesn’t tell you exactly what information the vehicle stores, processes, or shares.

Drivers Are Divided Over Cameras Watching Them

Online discussions show that drivers have plenty of questions about those little cameras pointed at the driver’s seat. A 2026 r/CarTalkUK thread about internal cameras drew comments from owners who understood the safety purpose but still worried about who could potentially access the footage. Others simply saw the technology as another layer of driver monitoring.

The annoyance factor is another recurring theme. In a 2026 r/drivingUK discussion, one Toyota driver complained that the camera repeatedly warned them to “sit up” even though they could see the road and mirrors perfectly well. Other commenters described the system as increasingly intrusive, illustrating one of the biggest complaints about driver monitoring: the technology doesn’t always interpret human behavior perfectly.

Tesla owners have been debating the issue for years, too. A 2022 r/teslamotors discussion about the cabin camera being enabled generated hundreds of votes and comments, with owners discussing whether the camera was being used for driver monitoring, analytics, or future Autopilot functionality.

These discussions make it clear why automakers need to be transparent about what these cameras capture and how that information is handled.

Your Car Is Not Necessarily Spying On You

The next time you notice that little camera pointed toward the driver’s seat, there’s a good chance its primary purpose is much simpler than it looks.

Modern driver assistance depends on an unusual arrangement: the vehicle can steer, brake and accelerate in certain circumstances, but the human still has to remain ready to take over. A camera aimed at the driver gives the vehicle another way to determine whether that human is actually paying attention.

These cameras are becoming more common as driver-assistance technology becomes more sophisticated. NHTSA is actively researching driver-monitoring systems as a way to address distraction and drowsy driving, including technologies that can assess eye gaze and head or body position.

The privacy question is separate—and worth asking. A camera pointed at you can be an important safety tool, but drivers should also know what the camera sees, where that information is processed, and whether anything leaves the vehicle. So, yes, your car may be watching you. In many cases, though, it’s watching for one very specific thing: whether you’re watching the road.
