Why Are Brake Lights Red, But Turn Signals Aren't Always?

If you’ve ever looked at the back of a car and wondered why the brake lights are red while the turn signals sometimes flash amber, there’s a good reason for the seemingly inconsistent color scheme.

The short answer is that red and amber help communicate different things. Red is associated with stopping and the rear of a vehicle, while a flashing amber light can make a turn signal stand out from the steady red lights surrounding it.

But there’s a catch. In the United States, automakers don’t have to use amber turn signals. Federal regulations allow rear turn signals to be either red or amber, which is why one car can have amber indicators while another uses the same red lamp for both braking and signaling. That can be confusing, especially since front turn signals are always amber.

Red Means Stop For A Reason

Red has long been associated with danger, warning, and stopping, making it a natural choice for the lights facing drivers behind a vehicle. U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 requires rear stop lamps to be red. It also requires rear taillamps to be red, creating a consistent color signal at the back of the vehicle.

That means a driver approaching another vehicle from behind can immediately associate a steady red light with the vehicle’s rear lighting and a brighter red illumination with braking.

The third brake light reinforces that message. NHTSA’s regulations require the high-mounted stop lamp to be red as well, giving following drivers another clear indication that the vehicle ahead is braking.

So while automakers have considerable freedom in how they arrange their rear lighting, the basic message is deliberately consistent: red at the rear means the vehicle is there and, when it gets brighter, it may be slowing or stopping.

Amber Gives The Turn Signal Its Own Identity

Turn signals have a different job. Instead of telling you that a vehicle is braking, they tell you that the driver intends to change direction. That’s where amber can be useful.

A flashing amber lamp is visually different from the steady red taillights and brake lights around it. When a driver activates the turn signal, the flashing color can make the intended maneuver easier to distinguish from braking.

NHTSA has acknowledged this distinction. In an interpretation concerning rear turn signals, the agency said its research showed a very slight improvement in signal detectability when amber was used as a separate turn signal, although the difference wasn’t large enough for NHTSA to require amber turn signals on every vehicle.

That helps explain why amber indicators are so common on vehicles designed for markets where separate turn-signal colors are emphasized.

The U.S. Lets Automakers Choose

Here’s where things get interesting: American cars don’t have to use amber rear turn signals. FMVSS 108 permits rear turn signals to be either red or amber. Front turn signals, by contrast, are required to be amber under the federal standard.

That gives automakers two basic approaches:

Red turn signals: The same rear lamp can perform multiple functions, flashing when the turn signal is activated and illuminating more strongly when the brakes are applied
Amber turn signals: A separate amber section can flash for the turn while the red brake lamp continues to communicate braking
Combined lighting: Some vehicles use sophisticated LED assemblies where different portions of the same housing perform different functions
European-style signaling: Vehicles built for markets following UNECE regulations generally use amber rear turn signals, creating a more consistent color distinction between turning and braking

The result is the mix you see on American roads today. A Ford, Chevrolet or Toyota might have red indicators, while another model from the same market uses amber.

Why Don’t All Cars Just Use Amber Turn Signals?

From a purely communication standpoint, there’s an obvious argument for giving the turn signal its own color. If red means braking and amber means turning, the driver behind you doesn’t have to figure out whether a flashing red lamp is a brake light or a turn signal.

NHTSA has studied this question. Its research has noted that amber turn signals can offer advantages in detecting certain signals, but the agency has also recognized that the real-world U.S. fleet contains both red and amber systems.

There are also design considerations. Modern cars frequently combine multiple lighting functions into thin LED assemblies, and manufacturers have to meet specific requirements for brightness, visibility, mounting location and activation.

NHTSA regulations even account for situations where stop and turn lamps share an assembly. The rules require the lighting system to distinguish the functions appropriately, including requirements for how a red turn signal interacts with the stop lamp. So the choice isn’t simply about whether amber looks better. Automakers are working within a detailed set of lighting requirements while trying to package several functions into increasingly complicated rear lamp designs.

Drivers Are Divided Over Red And Amber Turn Signals

Red versus amber turn signals have been debated on Reddit for years, and the arguments closely mirror the reasoning behind the different lighting systems. A 2020 r/cars thread titled “Red turn signals need to go” drew more than 5,000 upvotes, with many commenters arguing that amber is easier to distinguish from a brake light. Others pointed out that red signals remain legal in the U.S. and that manufacturers often use them because of American lighting regulations and vehicle design.

The visibility argument comes up repeatedly. In a 2022 r/cars discussion about “imperceptible red turn signals,” drivers described situations where dim red blinkers were difficult to notice in traffic, particularly during daylight. Several commenters argued that amber should be the standard because the color creates a clearer visual distinction from the red brake lights.

Redditors also frequently notice the difference between U.S.-spec cars and their European counterparts. In a 2019 r/cars discussion, users pointed out that some European vehicles receive amber rear indicators but switch to red signals for the U.S. market. Commenters attributed the difference to federal lighting requirements and the way manufacturers package brake and turn-signal functions into the same lamp assembly.

The debate is still active. A 2026 r/cars discussion tracking the state of amber rear turn signals in America compared dozens of manufacturers and sparked complaints about automakers using red indicators on North American vehicles even when the same models use amber signals elsewhere. Some commenters argued that amber is easier to spot, while others said they have driven around North America for years without finding red turn signals particularly confusing.

The Colors Are Really A Language For Drivers

The basic idea is to give drivers a visual language they can recognize quickly: red for the rear and braking, amber for directional signaling. The U.S. system simply allows manufacturers to blur that distinction by permitting red rear turn signals too.

That flexibility is why American roads contain both systems. One car can flash amber from a dedicated indicator while its brake lights remain solid red. Another can flash one of its red rear lamps while braking and signaling at the same time. Both are legal under the federal standard.

And while amber can provide a little extra separation between turning and braking, NHTSA’s position has historically been that the difference isn’t significant enough to mandate amber for every rear turn signal.

So there is not really a contradiction in the colors. Brake lights are red because red is the standardized rear stop signal. Turn signals can be amber because a different color can help distinguish a change of direction from braking.

The fact that American law permits both is simply why your neighbor’s car might flash red while yours flashes amber. What should be non-negotiable is drivers paying close attention to the car in front.
