Athenea has appointed Duncan McPhee as chief executive officer, effective 16 November 2026.
McPhee joins as Brayleys Cars and Johnsons Cars continue their integration under the Athenea name and accelerate plans for future growth.
The holding company AWR Holdings turned in losses of -£13.3m in the year to December 2025 compared to a profit of £2.4m in the prior year.
Turnover in 2025 was £904.2m compared to £623m in 2024, boosted by the acquisition of Johnsons in August last year for £60.8m.
The McPhee move was flagged up months ago, but McPhee was tied to a contract with Hendy.
McPhee brings 20 years-plus industry experience, including senior leadership roles at Lookers and Hendy Group.
In 15 years with Lookers, he held operational and franchise positions before being appointed chief operating officer in 2021.
This year has seen the rebranding of Brayleys and Johnsons to Athenea. McPhee and Andrew Burn will work closely together to provide a smooth handover.
Amro Jayousi, on behalf of the Board of Directors, said: “Over the past year, we have laid strong foundations for the future of the business. We have brought together two successful dealer groups, launched the Athenea brand and established a clear strategy for sustainable growth.
“Duncan’s track record of leading large-scale automotive retail operations, developing strong manufacturer partnerships and delivering operational excellence makes him the ideal person to lead the next chapter. We’re delighted to welcome him to Athenea and look forward to supporting a successful transition. “
McPhee said: “Athenea has already built significant momentum and has a compelling vision for the future.
“The combination of strong OEM partnerships, ambitious growth plans and a clear commitment to colleagues and customers creates an exciting platform for long-term success.
“I am looking forward to joining the team and working with colleagues across the Group as we continue to strengthen our existing brands, welcome new franchise partners and deliver a consistently outstanding experience for customers. There is tremendous opportunity ahead, and I am excited to help shape the next stage of Athenea’s journey.”
