The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) recently met with Lisa Smart, Liberal Democrat MP for Hazel Grove, at a local dealership to discuss key issues.
The meeting provided an opportunity to highlight the challenges facing the sector.
Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association, said: “It was positive to welcome Lisa Smart MP to the dealership as part of our Parliamentary Engagement programme and to have the opportunity to discuss the key issues currently facing retailers.
“The transition to zero-emission vehicles represents a significant change for the sector, and it is essential that UK policy remains aligned with global markets. If manufacturers begin limiting vehicle supply to the UK to meet ZEV Mandate targets, this could have a direct impact on dealership profitability and ultimately local employment.
“This is why it is important that the UK Government reviews the ZEV Mandate to ensure it supports a sustainable transition for businesses, consumers and the wider automotive sector.”
NFDA representatives discussed several key issues, including, the recent policy shift by the European Union, which has moved from a proposed 100% phase-out of combustion engine vehicles to a 90% emissions reduction target by 2035.
The meeting also discussed concerns about policy developments in Europe and the idea that vehicle manufacturers may begin limiting the supply of hybrid and internal combustion engine vehicles to the UK in order to meet ZEV Mandate targets.
Developments in the United States were also discussed as the US is the UK’s second-largest export market. Some policies aimed at accelerating electric vehicle adoption have recently been reversed.
The NFDA expressed concerns about the potential risk to dealership profitability and local employment.
