The Volkswagen ID.4 Is Getting A New Name. Here’s Everything We Know

By automotive-mag.com 4 Min Read

The Volkswagen ID.4 is dead—long live the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan. Rumor has it that the facelifted ID.4 will now carry the Tiguan name, bringing a familiar nameplate to the brand’s popular electric SUV.

The change is part of Volkswagen’s effort to make its EVs more recognizable, and thus, more appealing to mainstream buyers. Customers are more likely to recognize the name Tiguan—which has been in the US lineup for more than 15 years—than a bunch of random alphanumerics.

But that’s not the only thing that will change. The ID.4—er, ID. Tiguan should also receive an updated design, a refreshed interior, and if we’re lucky, potentially some changes to the powertrain. Here’s what we know so far.

What Will The ID. Tiguan Look Like?

The ID. Tiguan’s facelift is rumored to have a more conventional SUV look than the current ID.4. It’s likely to blend the ID family’s modern cues with design elements from the traditional Tiguan. Our rendering, pictured here, attempts to predict the final look of the ID. Tiguan.

The front fascia is expected to have a wider light bar, while the front and rear bumpers will be reshaped for a more sculpted, premium look. Door handles will return to traditional pull-type units, improving ergonomics and simplifying production compared with the current flush electronic handles.

What About The Interior?

Inside, Volkswagen will likely focus on making the cabin more premium and more user-friendly. Physical controls for climate and infotainment functions are returning, thankfully, replacing some of the touch-capacitive sliders that frustrated drivers in the previous model.

The instrument cluster and infotainment screen are expected to grow in size as well, and the overall layout should emphasize ergonomics, comfort, and higher-quality materials. That said, don’t expect a dramatic departure from the current model.

What Will Power The New ID. Tiguan?

Volkswagen MEB+ platform

The ID. Tiguan will sit on VW’s updated MEB+ platform, which should bring efficiency and performance improvements over the current MEB architecture. These upgrades should improve range, offer more efficient power delivery, and faster charging, though official figures have yet to be released. Drivetrain options for the ID. Tiguan are likely to mirror the current ID.4, with single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations.

When Will We See It?

The ID. Tiguan is expected to debut in late 2026, with sales kicking off early in 2027. Production will take place at Volkswagen’s Emden plant in Germany, while the Zwickau factory, where the current ID.4 is built, will gradually transition to other models.

What Will The ID. Tiguan Cost?

The ID. Tiguan shouldn’t be much pricier than the current ID.4, which starts at $46,570 for the entry-level Pro model. The combination of a familiar name, updated design, improved interior, and enhanced efficiency should help make the ID. Tiguan more appealing than the outgoing ID.4.
