The Suzuki Ignis is the most reliable 4×4 due to its claim rate of 3.57%, and average warranty claim of £595.14, according to Warranty Solutions Group (WSG) reliability data for the UK’s biggest selling 4x4s.
The findings are based on over a sample of 1,500 vehicle repair claims made during the last 12 months, across 18 of the most popular used 4×4 models.
WSG’s operations director, Martin Binnee, said: “The 4×4 market is accelerating at full throttle, driven by evolving consumer preferences and rapid technological innovation.
“From booming sales to a shift toward eco-friendly hybrid and electric models, the dynamic landscape of 4×4 vehicles provides plenty of compelling insights.
“Over the past five years, the 4×4 sector has witnessed remarkable growth, with registrations surging by an impressive 33% in 2023 alone. This upward trend underscores a strong consumer appetite for versatile, spacious off-roading vehicles that cater to modern lifestyles.”
The vehicle with the highest claim rate was the Land Rover Discovery (33.27%).
Despite this perceived unreliability, the vehicle has strong off-road capabilities, is more affordable than other vehicles in the segment, and is often a family favourite due to its seven-seater design.
Binnee said: “Reliability remains a hallmark of many 4x4s, but challenges persist.
“Notably, electrical and electronic systems have become the Achilles’ heel of these rugged vehicles, accounting for nearly a quarter (24%) of all 4×4 warranty claims processed by WSG between November 2023 and November 2024.
“This reflects the growing complexity of onboard technology and an increasing reliance on advanced systems in 4×4 design.”
