  • Sony and Honda’s jointly developed EV brand Afeela has revealed the Afeela 1
  • The Afeela 1 is a midsize liftback due to start deliveries in mid-2026
  • Reservations are open but only for residents of California

Sony and Honda surprised audiences at 2023 CES by announcing the jointly established electric vehicle brand Afeela and presenting a prototype for the brand’s first model, the Afeela 1, a somewhat innocuous midsize liftback.

At this week’s 2025 CES in Las Vegas, Afeela presented a near production-ready model and confirmed the start of reservations. The reservation process is only open to residents of California at present, and Afeela hasn’t indicated when or if customers from other states will be able to purchase the car.

The Afeela 1 is initially being offered in Afeela 1 Origin and Afeela 1 Signature versions, with prices starting from $89,900 and $102,900, respectively. Both prices include a complimentary three-year subscription to a variety of in-car features, including an AI-powered personal assistant and semi-automated driver-assist features. The pricier Signature will start deliveries in mid-2026, while buyers of the Origin will have to wait until 2027.

The Afeela 1 measures 193.5 inches long, making it about two inches shorter than a Honda Accord but with a wheelbase that’s almost seven inches longer. The interior is dominated by a series of screens spanning the width of the dash, a clear view of which is provided thanks to a yoke-style steering wheel. Sustainable materials are used for the trim, and optimally placed speakers featuring Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Technologies are included.

Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. Each motor is rated at 241 hp, which should result in spirited performance. The battery is a 91-kwh lithium-ion unit, and Afeela anticipates an EPA range estimate of up to 300 miles. DC fast charging at rates of up to 150 kw is possible, and a NACS-style charge port is included.

A high level of automated driving will also be possible, albeit with the driver still required to monitor and be ready to take control at all times. Afeela said its system, known as Afeela Intelligent Drive, will rely on a total of 40 cameras and sensors and will operate on both highway and urban roads.

A whole digital ecosystem will also be built up around Afeela’s vehicles. According to the brand, it wants an environment where creators and developers can freely develop applications and services that run in the vehicles, much like how third-party apps are developed for mobile phones.

Honda will be responsible for production, which will be handled at a plant in Ohio. An SUV and compact model are anticipated to follow later this decade.
