- Polestar is kicking things into high gear, launching four new EVs in just three years.
- Due to geopolitical and trade barriers, just one of these will certainly be sold in the U.S.
- The upcoming Polestar 4 wagon will “absolutely” come to North America, the company’s CEO confirmed for InsideEVs.
Polestar wants to go from struggling upstart to a global force to be reckoned with. As part of this ambitious plan, it wants to launch no fewer than four new models in just three years, more than doubling its portfolio by the end of 2028.
Not all of these cars will make it to the United States, at least not at first, but a surprise model will “absolutely” be sold stateside, the company’s CEO, Michael Lohscheller, confirmed for InsideEVs yesterday during an online discussion with international media representatives.
“The new variant of the Polestar 4 is absolutely coming to the US,” said Lohscheller. “It has genes of an estate, with a window in the back. It’s very progressive. There is no car like this.”
The yet-to-be-named version of Polestar’s best-selling electric model was teased yesterday, and all signs point to it looking like a slightly lifted station wagon. Compared to the regular Polestar 4, this new version will have a rear windshield and offer more cargo space, as seen in this spy photo from China. It will also be the only mass-market electric wagon in the U.S., seeing how the only other electric station wagon on sale here is the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.

But while the Taycan Cross Turismo costs over $118,000, the new Polestar 4 variant is expected to cost more or less the same as its coupe-shaped counterpart, which starts from $47,800.
Polestar’s new electric wagon will be built in South Korea, at the same factory that handles the regular Polestar 4. This makes both EVs subject to a 15% import tariff, but they’re not immune to hiked trade barriers, as President Donald Trump recently threatened to raise South Korean car import duties to 25%.
European deliveries of the Polestar 4’s wagon version are slated to begin in the fourth quarter. But the company’s new product push also includes the Polestar 5 four-door grand tourer halo car, a new generation of the Polestar 2 sedan, and the Polestar 7 compact SUV. That said, the company’s CEO was reluctant to give a straight answer about these three models’ availability in the U.S.
“It’s always our intention to launch the other cars in other markets, including the U.S,” Lohscheller told InsideEVs. The car maker’s head honcho reiterated that Europe will remain the brand’s main market, and that America will continue to play an important role.
The Polestar 5 and Polestar 7 will be built in Europe, so they would be subject to a 15% import tariff stateside. But seeing how the 5 is a low-volume performance model, it’s highly unlikely it will reach U.S. shores. Meanwhile, the Polestar 7, which is due for a 2028 reveal, has a higher chance of being sold here, but there’s no confirmation yet.
Meanwhile, the all-new Polestar 2 will be assembled in China, just like the current generation, which will be discontinued by the end of this year. This makes it subject to the same 100% tariff that cut the first generation’s U.S. journey short.
