Lucid Recalls Over 4,000 Floor Mats Over Unintended Acceleration Risk

  • Lucid is recalling over 4,000 floor mats.
  • The first iteration of the company’s All-Weather mats could slide over the accelerator pedal of the Air EV.

Lucid, the maker of the Air and Gravity luxury electric vehicles, is recalling 4,294 floor mats because they may move in the footwell and interfere with the accelerator pedal. And yes, you read that correctly, the floor mats are being recalled, not the cars they were installed in.

According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Air EV genuine all-weather mats sold by Lucid until February 2025 are the culprit. They have nibs on the bottom but no hole through which an anchor would connect.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing owners can do except take the mat out of the driver’s footwell. Lucid said it would reimburse customers for the price of the potentially dangerous all-weather floor mats and that there is a new model that has a hole. This way, it attaches firmly to the carpet beneath and doesn’t go anywhere.

Lucid’s updated all-weather mats have holes to secure them onto the built-in anchors on the floor. The recalled mats don’t have holes.

“The safety of our customers and their families is the highest priority,” a Lucid spokesperson said in an email to Automotive News. “Lucid has begun contacting the owners of vehicles for which these mats were originally designed to notify them of the recalls and to provide further information.”

The issue was first noticed in August of last year by a sales associate driving a Lucid Air in Europe. The EV maker said that in 13 instances, some movement of the all-weather floor mat was reported, but no interference with the accelerator pedal was observed. Lucid is not aware of any crashes caused by this issue but has decided to recall the mats because they pose “an unreasonable risk of movement that may interfere with the accelerator returning to the idle position.”

The Lucid Air went on sale in 2021 as a luxury four-door EV with impressive driving range and charging performance. With up to 512 miles from a fully charged battery, the Air is the longest-range EV on sale in the United States today. Its 900-volt battery system also means it can charge really quickly, as long as you find a DC fast charger that can deliver what it takes. According to Lucid, the Air can gain 200 miles of range in 12 minutes.
