Italdesign establishes US headquarters in Metro Detroit

Legendary Italian design house Italdesign, now part of the Volkswagen Group, plans to establish a U.S. headquarters in Bloomfield Township, part of the greater Metro Detroit area.

According to Italdesign, which presented its Quintessenza GT concept at this week’s 2025 CES event in Las Vegas, establishing the U.S. headquarters will help the company build closer ties with many local players in the auto industry, including major automakers, suppliers, engineering firms, and companies specializing in testing and validation.

The new U.S. headquarters will house Italdesign USA, which was established in early 2024 and is headed by Fabrizio Mina.

“Having an operational headquarters in Michigan is essential to effectively support our American customers,” Mina said in a statement. “This local presence allows us to respond promptly to their needs and provide personalized, high-quality service to large industry players or startups entering the automotive sector.”

Local news outlet The Oakland Press reported on Jan. 8 that Italdesign had also considered sites in California and Ohio. The decision to pick Bloomfield Township is expected to bring more than $20 million in investment to Michigan and create at least 24 jobs.

Italdesign was founded in 1968 by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Aldo Mantovani, originally as Italdesign Giugiaro. The VW Group took control of the company in 2010, and Giugiaro, who was still with the company at the time, eventually left in 2015 to start the rival design company GFG Style with his son Fabrizio. While the company continues to specialize in designing concepts and production models for both major and minor automotive brands, Italdesign has also, in recent years, built a series of low-volume cars sold under its own brand.
