Ford terminated more than 50 retail dealers in January as part of its restructuring of the network.

All but three of the dealers have retained their authorised repairer status, Ford told Motor Trader.

Back in 2020 Ford announced that it was going to reduce its network of sales outlets in half over the next five years.

In2020 had 395 car dealers and wanted to reduce this to around 210-230 by 2024.

Ford was a pioneer of Customer Marketing Areas in the late 1990s when it was the number one carmaker in terms of car sales.

Since then its market share in cars has fallen although it still market leader for light commercial vehicles.

To make dealers more profitable Ford wants a tighter network with higher volumes of cars going through fewer dealers with larger market areas.

Light commercial vehicle sales have been growing in importance for the network and Ford. Ford now has a formidable network of Transit Centres across the UK, following heavy investment in recent years.

In a statement Ford said: “We have been actively restructuring the dealer network over the past several years to better align with the evolving needs of our business and deliver enhanced service.”
