Euro NCAP is sponsoring The Commercial Vehicle Safety Award at the Motor Trader Commercial Industry Awards held at the NEC in 29 April.
Since 1997, Euro NCAP has carried out safety assessments and testing on new vehicles, offering consumers, policymakers and industry realistic and independent insights into the safety performance of vehicles sold in Europe.
Backed by several European Governments, motoring, consumer and insurance organisations and supported by a network of laboratories across Europe, Euro NCAP has become a catalyst for encouraging and delivering significant safety improvements to new vehicle design.
For consumers, Euro NCAP’s star rating has become synonymous with a quest for a safer car. In 2024, Euro NCAP entered a new arena: the commercial vehicle sector and launched the results of its first Safer Trucks Testing Programme.
According to NCAP, in the UK last year, heavy trucks represented almost 5.8% of all traffic but 14.3% of all fatalities.
“Lorries are not involved in collisions more frequently than other vehicle types but when they are involved, a fatality is more likely.
“Euro NCAP believes that encouraging commercial vehicles manufacturers, by rewarding safety improvements with a star rating will incentivise good performance, allow optimisation of operational safety and cost as well as improve truck safety. Euro NCAP intends to create a market where the safest choice of vehicle is the most profitable one,” it added.
