Car retailers and the motor sector have welcomed the government’s decision to launch a consultation on the ZEV Mandate.
The Mandate has come under attack for the past 12 months for failing to support the manufacture and sales of electric vehicles.
The consultation will look at the phasing out sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and and the detail of the ZEV Mandate. The consultation closes on 19 February.
“NFDA welcomes the Government’s launch of the consultation today, seeking views on proposals to support the UK’s transition to zero-emission vehicles,” said Sue Robinson, chief executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA)
“While this consultation is a positive step, it is vital for the Government to recognize that consumer demand is essential to effectively stimulate the market.
“We emphasise the importance of introducing demand-side incentives for private consumers to complement this supply-side shift. Additionally, regional disparities must be addressed, as electric vehicle infrastructure in Northern Ireland remains significantly behind that of Great Britain.”
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief Executive, said, “The automotive industry welcomes government’s review of both the end of sale date for cars powered solely by petrol or diesel, and possible changes to the flexibilities around the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate.
“These are both critical issues for an industry that is facing significant challenges globally as it tries to decarbonise ahead of natural market demand.”
