BMW stalls Mini EV production plans at Oxford amid ‘multiple uncertainties’

BMW is reconsidering its timeline for all-electric Mini vehicles in the UK due to uncertainties in the automotive sector, including falling EV sales and potential trade barriers.

In 2023, BMW committed to investing £600m as it moved its Mini brand entirely to an electric lineup by 2030.

The Oxford plant is gearing-up to build two new all-electric MINI models from 2026, the 3-door MINI Cooper and the compact crossover MINI Aceman.

However, a statement issued last week by BMW Group indicates that this schedule is now under reassessment.

The statement reads: “Plant Oxford is at the heart of MINI production, manufacturing and exporting a range of models which are sought after in the UK and around the world.

“However, given the multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry, the BMW Group is currently reviewing the timing for reintroducing battery-electric MINI production in Oxford.”
