  • Honda announced a next-generation hybrid powertrain due for launch in 2025
  • The powertrain is designed to run either a 1.5- or 2.0-liter inline-4 as its gas component
  • The first application will be a modern Prelude

Honda on Wednesday provided the first details on its next-generation hybrid powertrain, set to roll out from 2025, starting with a modern Prelude.

The new hybrid powertrain builds on Honda’s existing 2-motor hybrid system, first introduced a decade ago, which features an efficient gas engine working with two electric motors. One motor aids the engine, while the other charges the battery.

For the next-generation system, Honda has worked to further improve efficiency while reducing costs. The automaker has also developed separate small-size and midsize versions, featuring 1.5- and 2.0-liter inline-4 engines, respectively. The engines operate on the Atkinson cycle.

The powertrain can run purely on electric or gas power, as well as a mix of the two. Honda hasn’t disclosed the range the powertrain will deliver on electric power alone.

Drive is to the front wheels only, but Honda plans to offer an electric motor for the rear axle on some models, enabling an all-wheel-drive system.

The new powertrain is expected to include a hybrid transmission, similar to Honda’s current hybrid system. However, Honda will offer the new Honda S+ Shift drive mode as standard on all next-gen hybrids. According to the automaker, this feature precisely controls engine revs during acceleration and deceleration to deliver improved responsiveness and simulated gear shifts, enhancing the driving experience.

Honda also announced the Mid-Size Platform on Wednesday. This new platform is approximately 200 pounds lighter than the one it replaces while delivering improved ride and handling. Honda achieved this, the company said, through enhanced body rigidity management.

Despite introducing new hybrids, Honda remains committed to transitioning exclusively to electric and fuel cell vehicles. While unveiling the new hybrids, Honda reiterated its plan to make 100% of its lineup EVs and fuel cell vehicles by 2040. The automaker plans to launch multiple zero-emission vehicles in quick succession, starting in late 2025 with the debut of the new 0 Series of EVs.
