The Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI) scheme went live in the UK today giving accredited workshops access to security related anti-theft related repair and maintenance information.
This includes key programming and coding, immobiliser system data, ECU Programming and Software Updates, anti-theft system functions and diagnostic information.
Although the use of the SERMI scheme is not mandated by UK law, key carmakers are taking part in the scheme, adopting SERMI as their trusted authorisation framework.
The first brands taking part in the UK include Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota with more to come.
The introduction of the scheme is billed as a big win independent garages who have campaigned for years to achieve this goal although the scheme does benefit franchised dealers doing all makes servicing.
Garages need accreditation to get on the scheme which in the UK is managed by RMISC (RMI Standards and Certifications) and involves submitting documentation, undergoing background checks and passing audits.
Stuart James, chief Executive of the IGA, said: “Today matters. This is the point where years of work, challenge and persistence deliver something tangible for independent garages across the UK.
“SERMI changes the position of the independent sector. It gives professional, compliant businesses access to the information they need to repair modern vehicles properly, safely, and legitimately.
“It also sends a clear message about the capability and standards within our sector. Garages that achieve SERMI approval are demonstrating that they meet a recognised, trusted benchmark, one that is supported by manufacturers and understood across Europe.”
