NFDA welcomes EV charging installation changes

The Government has removed planning requirements for certain home electric vehicle charging installations.

From Wednesday 21 October, drivers without off-street parking will no longer need planning permission for qualifying cross-pavement charging solutions, potentially saving up to £300 in installation costs.

The move has been backed by National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), which said it will help make switching to an EV easier and more affordable for motorists.

NFDA argues that removing barriers to home charging is an important step in encouraging EV uptake, particularly as charging costs and accessibility remain concerns for many motorists.

The changes follow a strong September for EV registrations, which rose 36% compared with last year.

Sue Robinson, chief executive of NFDA, said: “Making home charging easier and more affordable is good news for motorists and another positive step towards encouraging EV uptake. With the ZEV Mandate under review, measures that support consumer demand are more important than ever.’

“NFDA will continue working with Government to support a practical and affordable transition to electric vehicles for motorists and retailers.”
