Used car sales rose by 7.9% in September compared with August, while average selling times lengthened, according to Brego’s Car Market Insight Report.

Total used car adverts rose by 1.8%, with trade adverts up 7.8% and pre-registered adverts increasing by 15.3%.

Rupert Pontin, head of insight and communications at Brego, said: “September brought a welcome recovery in used car sales after August but the increase in activity needs to be considered alongside growing stock availability and longer selling times.

“For dealers, a busier market does not automatically mean every car will move more quickly. Understanding demand at derivative level, selecting the right stock and pricing it realistically remain essential.

“EVs continued to sell faster than the wider market, while the increase in pre-reg availability adds another factor for dealers to consider when assessing the competition for their stock.”

Average days to sale increased by 10.6% compared with August, reaching 42.9 days. The findings highlight that rising market activity does not necessarily translate into faster stock turn.

Used EVs continued to sell more quickly than the wider market, averaging 38.2 days to sale in September.

The Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD topped the best-selling used car ranking with 1,254 recorded sales. It was followed by the Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge followed (985) and the Toyota Yaris 1.5 Hybrid Design (911).
