Ford’s $30,000 Fathom EV Truck Appears More Conventional Than Promised

It’s been almost a year since Ford’s CEO told The Verge that its upcoming affordable electric truck would be hard to categorize. Speaking to The Verge in August 2025, Jim Farley said the first body style built atop its new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform would be a pickup, “but it’s really not a pickup,” describing it instead as a “new silhouette.”

That makes the new photos and video Farley shared on X especially interesting. They show two camouflaged Fathom prototypes driving through Las Vegas after undergoing hot-weather testing in the desert. Despite the heavy camo, what emerges looks surprisingly familiar: a four-door crew cab truck.

Sure, it appears to have a relatively low stance, a conventional hood and a short pickup bed. The shape of the front end isn’t as boxy and upright as these prototypes suggest, though, and we have caught glimpses of it before. It has more of a wedge-shaped nose than a traditional truck, which will make it look sleeker than Ford’s similar-size combustion alternative, the Maverick.

So the Fathom currently looks like an electric counterpart to the Maverick (rather than the Ranger, as previously thought) but without the typical blunt pickup front. Some kind of aerodynamic treatment is likely hiding under the front-end camo, which doesn’t show its actual shape. One thing that clearly gives it away is how low the headlights sit.

The same kind of thick black camouflage also hides the back part of the cab, which may also not be as upright as in a typical pickup.

Ford says the Fathom will have more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, without counting its bed or front trunk. Every version will be BlueCruise-capable and offer bidirectional charging capability. Inside, it will feature a large touchscreen with embedded Apple Maps navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility will all be standard.

The manufacturer still leaves a lot untold for now. Fathom prototypes were seen plugged into a Tesla Supercharger station, suggesting it will feature a native NACS connector, but this hasn’t been confirmed. Ford also hasn’t said what size battery it will have, how quickly it will charge, or dropped any hints about its range.

The Fathom’s conventional appearance also hides some genuinely radical engineering. Ford says two large aluminum castings will replace 146 separate parts, enabling a new way to build vehicles through a new production process. The lineup will eventually expand, with Ford’s EV chief confirming plans for multiple battery capacities and an all-wheel-drive version.

The UEV architecture features a structural battery pack with prismatic LFP cells as the vehicle’s floor, which Ford claims requires 20% fewer parts, 25% fewer fasteners, and 15% less assembly time than a typical vehicle. The unusual “assembly tree” process has the front, rear, and battery sections built separately, with large aluminum castings replacing many smaller components.

 

Ford has shown the platform accommodating compact, midsize, and three-row crossovers, along with cargo and passenger vans, although none has been confirmed for production. Jim Farley recently revealed that four additional UEV-based models are planned, with a revived electric Escape reportedly expected in 2029, potentially making it the second vehicle to follow the Fathom.

It is starting to look like the revolution promised by the Fathom will be less about how it looks and operates and more about its packaging and Ford’s ability to build it down to cost. But for a truck touted as unconventional in both look and feel, it certainly doesn’t look that way based on any of the prototypes we’ve seen so far.
