Lloyd Motor Group is marking half a century in business this year. The group has grown from a single BMW retailer on Derwent Street in Cockermouth to a business ranked 23 in the Motor Trader Top 200 Dealer Groups with annual turnover of £910.8m.

Lloyd now represents BMW, MINI, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volkswagen, Škoda, Volvo, and Kia, across Cumbria, Lancashire, the North East, North Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders.

Volvo joined the group as early as 1977. The 1980s brought Carlisle BMW, marking the group’s first step beyond West Cumbria, followed by the addition of Land Rover through the 1990s.

Growth continued into the 2000s with Jaguar, BMW and MINI, extending the group’s reach across Cumbria, Newcastle and Lancashire.

The 2010s saw further expansion with new Jaguar Land Rover retail centres in Ripon and Kelso, Blackpool BMW, and Lloyd Used Car Centre in Carlisle, alongside the addition of Kia.

Most recently, the group has continued to grow across Northern England, welcoming new sites in York and the North East, and adding INEOS, Volkswagen, Škoda, BYD and Geely to its portfolio.

Sam Lloyd, managing director of Lloyd Motor Group, said: “Fifty years is a significant milestone, and one we mark with a great deal of humility.

“This business was built on trust, hard work and long-term relationships, and that hasn’t changed since the day we opened our doors in Cockermouth in 1976.

“Everything we’ve achieved has been down to the loyalty of our customers, the dedication of our colleagues, and the support of the communities we serve. We’re proud of our history, but we’re just as focused on the next fifty years as we are on the last.”

To mark the anniversary, Lloyd Motor Group has launched a series of community initiatives and charitable activities across its retailer locations throughout the year.
