Jaguar Land Rover has paused exports of cars to the US in August as it appraises President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs.

The US is an important market for JLR. In 2024 it sold 431,733 cars worldwide of which 94,994 went to the US, a growth market.

Last year US sales rose by 22.5%. China is its biggest market accounting for 104,123 sales while the UK saw 79,720 sales.

In a statement JLR said: “As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions, including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid- to longer-term plans.”

The UK government is trying to strike a deal with the US that would avoid tariffs being implemented. For the UK, the US is the second largest car export market after the EU.

In the US car share prices fell on the news of the imposition of tariffs. GM, Ford and Tesla fell 8%, 4.5% and 1.3% respectively.

Mike Hawes, CEO of the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders, said: “We hope a deal between the UK and US can still be negotiated to reduce or even remove the tariff and recognise Government continues to work hard to secure such a deal.

“The industry is already facing multiple headwinds and this announcement comes at the worst possible time.

“SMMT is in constant contact with government and will be looking for trade discussions to accelerate as we need to secure a way forward that supports jobs and economic growth on both sides of the Atlantic.”
