X-ray analysis of the restyling

By automotive-mag.com 7 Min Read

The Tesla Model Y, the world’s leading electric car, is the flagship model that confirms the company’s position as a leading brand in key markets from the United States to China via Europe. For this reason, the mid-career restyling could not be a mere touch-up. The new 2025 electric SUV, which is currently only available in China but will soon be available in other markets, has several new features.

Codenamed ‘Juniper’, the update affects the exterior styling, interior comfort and functionality, and to a lesser extent the mechanical parts, to consolidate and reinforce the qualities that have made this model the preferred choice of more than 1 million motorists over the last few years.

Tesla Model Y 2025: platform and dimensions

The Tesla Model Y 2025 confirms the shared platform with the Model 3, launched a year ago, and shows some of the innovations now found on the Model Y. The reference segment remains the D segment, that of mid-size SUVs, where new competitors such as the Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron have emerged.

The Tesla Model Y retains its shape and proportions, but changes its look and introduces the new Glacier Blue colour.

The car is 4.8 metres long, around 4.5 cm longer than before due to the new bumper design, but remains 1.92 metres wide and 1.62 metres high, with an unchanged wheelbase of 2.89 metres.

In terms of styling, the main changes are at the front, with slimmer headlamps, a light bar linking the two main elements, and a new bonnet. At the rear, the new full-width light strip, stretched between the two angular light clusters, is also noticeable. These solutions are similar to those seen on the Cybertruck and Cybercab.

The company has not released much information, so it is not known whether this new design will also bring improvements in aerodynamic efficiency, which was already remarkable on the first Model Y, with a CX of just 0.23, and therefore in fuel consumption and range, which have increased in any case.

  • Length: 4.8 metres
  • Width: 1.92 metres
  • Height: 1.62 metres
  • Wheelbase: 2.89 metres
  • Weight: 1,884-1,998 kg

Tesla Model Y 2025: space on board

Always minimalist, yet comfortable and spacious, the interior of the new Tesla Model Y incorporates the updates already seen in the redesigned Model 3. The interior has been updated to include customisable ambient lighting, ventilated front seats and power-folding rear seats, as well as new fabric upholstery for the dashboard. Windows are also new and thicker for improved soundproofing.

On the driver’s side, there are new features in the 15.4-inch central display, which has been upgraded, as well as the 8-inch rear passenger display. Also new is the steering wheel, which takes its cue from the Model 3. Next to it, in the first photos of the standard version available in China, is a new lever, perhaps a light switch for the direction indicators, which were previously controlled from the steering wheel.

The dimensions have been retained, but the load capacity has not changed from that of the first version, which ranged from 600 to 2,158 litres, plus a 117-litre front ‘frunk’. The new seat, however, should improve practicality.

  • Luggage compartment: 600 to 2,158 litres
  • Front luggage compartment: 117 litres

Tesla Model Y 2025: battery and range

The Tesla Model Y range, at least as far as the Chinese market is concerned, starts with two versions while we wait for the Performance, which will arrive at a later date. For now, you can choose between the RWD model with a single rear motor and the Long Range AWD with two motors, four-wheel drive and a larger battery.

Capacity is not specified, but the outgoing model had 55 and 75 kWh respectively, with WLTP ranges of around 283 and 331 miles. In addition, a rear-wheel drive Long Range with a range of 373 miles was available, but this does not appear to have been confirmed. The new one is expected to improve on these figures, although at the moment we only know the figures approved in China, where the cycle is less strict and where the new Model Y has claimed ranges of 368 and 447 miles.

Tesla Model Y 2025: recharging

The batteries are of the LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) type and have a high charging power of up to 170 kW for the base model and 250 kW for the AWD Long Range version, respectively. Here too, however, we’ll have to check that the specifications for markets other than China are the same.

Tesla Model Y 2025 pricing

The Chinese price list starts at 263,500 yuan, equivalent to just under £30,000, but it’s higher than the outgoing model by around 5%, so we expect prices to rise slightly in other markets too. However, European production, which will take place at the Gigafactory in Berlin, will protect Tesla from the danger of higher prices due to tariffs that the EU has set for electric cars made in China.
