- The Zeekr 7GT is a station wagon version of the Zeekr 007 sedan.
- In China, the Zeekr 007 starts at around $29,500, slightly cheaper than the China-market Tesla Model 3. ($31,600)
- Zeekr plans to export more of its models to more markets across the globe.
While Zeekr stuns the American public at CES with an announcement of a U.S office (but no launch in the U.S market) and its open-air Zeekr MIX, it took to social media to wow all those not in attendance with teasers of a car in a body style not often seen in the United States – a station wagon. Specifically, an electric-powered station wagon. Officially teased on X, Instagram and Threads, Zeekr showed off monochrome, dimly-lit photos of its latest model—the 7GT.
Zeekr didn’t drop any details on social media or at CES, but It’s clear as day that the 7GT is a swankier, more practical version of the 007 Sedan. This means it will use the same variant of the Geely-Volvo-Zeekr SEA platform that underpins cars like the Polestar 4 or Volvo EX30. Yet, unlike those cars, particularly the Polestar, it should use an 800-volt architecture as well as Zeekr’s 75 kWh Golden Battery that can sprint from 10-80% in under 12 minutes.
I suppose that in a crossover-obsessed world, an EV station wagon seems like a financial fool’s errand. Yet, there are spaces in some car markets where hatchbacks, station wagons or estate cars are still desirable. In China, the 7GT will go head to head with the Nio ET5 Touring, a vehicle that Nio claims is the best-selling premium EV in the world. I mean, there’s not a hell of a lot of competitors in that segment, but that’s still pretty cool. Also, Zeekr aims to be a global company, and wagons are very important in markets like Europe. The Zeekr 7GT may end up being cross-shopped against the not-for-U.S. BMW i5 Touring.
From what we can see, the 7GT wears the new long roofline and station wagon body well. Its characteristic floating roof detail has been preserved, and the car looks significantly more practical than its sedan cousin. If it manages to drive as well as the 007 sedan I drove last year, then Zeekr might just have a hit on its hands.
It’s not entirely clear if or when the 7GT will exit China. Zeekr’s next model meant for export is the 7X crossover, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the 007 sedan and 7GT station wagon show up sooner rather than later. Hopefully, the 7GT shows up on my doorstep, but given the deteriorating situation on anti-China sentiment and tariffs, there’s probably a snowball’s chance in hell that’ll ever happen.
A boy can dream though, can’t he?
