ZEV Mandate impact on van market could be ‘very big’ warns Vertu boss

Vertu CEO Robert Forrester has called for further intervention on the ZEV Mandate for both cars and vans.

Speaking to Motor Trader Forrester said following government intervention things had improved but there was a long way to go and government needed to come back to the issue.

“The situation is better than it was this time last year. The grant introduced over the summer and we are getting far cheaper and more affordable electric vehicles coming into the market, that all helps stimulate the market.

“The bottom line is not one of these targets are ever going to be achieved. Even with the grant, electric vehicle only got to 23% in September against a target of 28% This is an ongoing issue that we are going to keep coming back to as an industry,” said Forrester.

For vans the position is even worse.

“The position for vans is much worse. I think even through the targets are lower on vans. I think the impact on a market could be very big and obviously we are the biggest player probably in vans. So, vans is a concern as is the whole Z transition to 2030, which goes against the global trends where industry and governments are rowing back and going back into petrol and hybrid.”
