Sales of Chinese brands surged in August, up 121% to 43,500 units, according to figures from Jato Dynamics.
It said combined registrations of Chinese car brands last month were higher than those of Audi (41,300 units) and Renault (37,800 units).
The top five players (MG, BYD, Jaecoo, Omoda, Leapmotor) account for 84% of the total. Overall Chinese car brands increased market share to a record 5.5%
According to Jato, MG registered more new cars than both Tesla and Fiat last month, BYD was ahead of Suzuki and Jeep, and Jaecoo And Omoda outsold brands including Alfa Romeo and Mitsubishi.
“European consumers are responding positively to the growing, competitive line-up from China’s car brands,” said Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics
Overall, August was a positive month for Europe’s new passenger car market with registrations up 5% to 790,177 units.
