Chinese carmaker Chery, the parent of Jaecoo and Omoda, is reported by Reuters to be negotiating to acquire VW manufacturing sites in Germany, aiming to locally produce its new Lepas SUVs for Europe amid expanded operations in Spain.
.Currently, Chery is engaged in advanced negotiations to acquire two Volkswagen (VW) manufacturing plants, one located in Dresden and the other in Osnabruck.
These facilities are said to be earmarked for closure as part of VW’s broader strategy to cut costs amidst a challenging market environment.
Since 2024, Chery has been assembling vehicles at a former Nissan factory in Barcelona, Spain, in collaboration with local company Ebro.
By establishing production across multiple sites in Europe, Chery appears to be strategically positioning itself to circumvent potential trade barriers while also enhancing its ability to respond to local consumer preferences and demands.
